Small Groups Weekly Bible Study – January 20

Beginnings – 1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.”

Theme: Genesis – In the Beginning, God…

 Warm-Up Questions:

  1. How do you respond to what Mike White stated: “The Christian doesn’t have to choose between science and the Biblical Creation account.
  2. What does his statement, “Genesis begins with the Trinitarian God, and not humanity, as the center of everything,mean to you?
Observation and Interpretation Questions: 

Mike said, “Being made in the image of God gives us the capacity to relate, the ability to love, to be holy, to know, have morals, to create and to rule over God’s creation.”

Read Philippians 2:1-4. The capacity to relate

  1. What does Paul pray would be the goal for you as a believer (verses 1-2)?
  2. Why do you think Paul directed us all to look out for one another (verses 3-4)?

Read 1 John 4:7-11. The ability to love

  1. What does John say is the reason we should love one another (verses 7-8)?
  2. Why can you be confident that you will be able to accomplish this (verses 9-11)?

Read 1 Peter 1:13-16. The capability to be holy

  1.  How does Peter say you should prepare yourself for holiness (verse 13)?
  2. Why is it vital that you understand that God Himself is our example (verses 15-16)?

Read James 3:13-18. The opportunity to know and have morals

  1.  What are you told regarding how your conduct reflects your faith (verses 13-14)?
  2. How would James say you can know heavenly peace from worldly peace (verses 15-18)?
Application Questions
  1. What are you going to do to be more aware of the first-world bubble in which you live?
  2. How can you share with one other person the powerful reality of God’s creation?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, reveal to us again the stamp of Your creation that You have put on us, as Your image-bearers, that we can show forth that same image to others in our lives.

Talk and Pray with one another about how you can Join Jesus on His mission in your own lives this week, using the questions on the back, and pray for one another about any personal concerns or praises you have.

Going Deeper

Genesis 1:1-2 says: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

How would you state what that means to you as you think about it?

  1. Read Genesis 1:3-5 – “Then God said...”
    Why might it be important to consider that it was God who created day and night?
  2. Read Genesis 1:6-8 – “Then God said...
    What do you suppose was the “waters above” and “waters below” in this creation account?
  3. Read Genesis 1:9-13 – “Then God said...”
    Do you think the water was separated from the dry ground as we know it today?
  4. Read Genesis 1:14-19 – “Then God said…
    How are you aware of the interaction of the earth and the moon on our tides and seasons?
  5. Read Genesis 1:20-23. – “Then God said…”
    Why do you think God made so many different kinds of fish and birds as He did?
  6. Read Genesis 1:24-31. – “Then God said…”
    What impresses you most about the creation of the animals and mankind?
  7. Read Genesis 2:1-3. – “Then God blessed
    What does it mean to you that God rested on and blessed the seventh day?

Share one thing you will do to celebrate the beauty of God’s creation more in the future?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, open our eyes that we may behold the beauty of Your creation and help us to recognize that, in love, You made us to rule over it all for our enjoyment.
